Put the silver items in a bowl and cover them with white distilled vinegar, then add baking soda into the bowl – the approximate proportions are around 3 tablespoons of baking soda for every cup of vinegar. Leave the silver in the mixture for about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Rinse with clean lukewarm water and dry with a soft cotton cloth.
Things to Avoid When Cleaning Silver:
If your sterling silver jewellery contains gemstones, such as rings, earrings etc, do not submerge and leave it to soak in water because this will erode any adhesive and loosen the stone(s).
Don’t use scrubbing pads, as these will scratch your jewellery and, do not wrap your silver jewellery pieces in latex or rubber.
Try not to store your silver jewellery with metals like stainless steel because this will lead to tarnishing.
